Geography Homework
Geography homework can be really boring for kids. First off it’s a whole bunch of meaningless lines explaining places they have never been. Secondly; most of the time there are a whole bunch of words they’ve never heard before. I don’t know if you ever had these sorts of problems in geography. Regardless of how you feel about the subject, if your kid is struggling with it, you want to help.
I am going to list off some simple steps to work on with your child. These are some good starting points for helping your son or daughter get interested in geography:
1. Get excited: The first step is always to try and have as much positive energy as possible. If you can find a way to have fun with the topic then, of course, your kid will too. It’s the simplest solution, but it can also be the hardest. It really depends on your attitude, and how your kid reacts. As soon as you both are getting into it and having fun, the energy will just flow into the homework. It will be done before you know it.
2. Learn more of the background: Remember how we discussed how boring geography homework can be for kids? Well the way to attack this problem is at the root. Find out more so that the place names and boundaries aren’t so alien. Let’s use European geography as an example. First you can pick up some travel books. Plan a pretend trip, plan out places to stop and get the lay of the land. You need to know more about France? Then you definitely need to see Paris, right? Now you look up all the stuff you need to know about it, the surrounding cities.
3. Make it fun: Engage your kid’s imagination. Help them imagine what it would be like to live in one of these places. If they lived there they would need to know how to get around, right? So then they feel like they have a good reason to know the geography.
When you get involved helping your kid in geography, you get more than just grade improvements. You develop a closer relationship with your son or daughter. You’ll see an improvement in their attitude towards school in general. Hopefully if you have done everything right, this enthusiasm will spill over into other subjects. But you should at least have brought up their geography grade, and seeing them succeed is what it’s all about.
